Sheila Mather

Biography

Sheila Mather lives near the charming coastal town of Sidney on Vancouver Island. Her light-filled studio overlooks the trees and oceans that inspire many of her paintings.

Sheila’s earlier days were spent in Vancouver running her own design and illustration company. The move to the Island on 2000 brought with it a slower pace of living and an opportunity to turn to painting full-time. For over 10 years she painted with pastels – loving the immediacy and intense colours she could create with the medium. She attained Master Pastellist designation and won several prestigious awards for her work. Her newer work includes paintings in oils and acrylics, and paintings on gold leaf. Her love of immediacy and colour continues as her work evolves, and her sense of design shines through in all her paintings.

‘The work of being an artist never ends – its both a challenge and a passion, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. My studio is my happy place.’

Artist's Statement

As an artist I’ve learned to observe the world in a different way – as light and shadow and colour and form – and I’ve become more keenly aware of the beauty that surrounds me.

My paintings are explorations of colour and light. I enjoy bold colour and strong composition, and my paintings are not finished until I’ve added some ‘wow’ factor – those little hits of colour that make them dance.

The act of painting is an adventure – you never know where it will take you, but the journey is always exciting.
